History of El Cerro

“Dad first traveled to Vieques in 1984 after finding out about Government incentives to move manufacturing businesses to
Puerto Rico. He ended up falling in love with Vieques, going back repeatedly for several years until he found the property where El Cerro sits today. They purchased the property in 1988, and built the current complex in 1991, Dad was the architect of all the buildings at El Cerro, he’d work on them continuously on his graph paper and #2 pencil, of course he never used a computer, cell phone, nor answering machine. He used to say, “If people want to get ahold of me, they’ll figure it out.” Allegedly, he waited 3 years to get a telephone because he refused to pay any under the table money to get it faster! Dad had a vision that each of his kids and closest friends would each have a house at the El Cerro complex, of course Mom thought he was crazy, but went along for the ride.

He also had a vision of building a golf course on the Government land surrounding El Cerro. Of course, some of this never happened, but why not dream big!

In 1986, he moved a company that manufactured automated weather observation systems from Columbus Ohio to Vieques. At one point, the business employed over 50 people on Vieques. In 1989, Vieques was hit so hard by hurricane Hugo that he was forced to move the company back to Ohio in order to maintain production.
